This dataset reports the crude rates of drug overdose deaths, including a subset specifically for opioid-related overdose deaths. The crude rate is calculated as the number of deaths in a given year divided by the population for that year, then multiplied by 100,000.
- Crude Overdose Death Rate per 100,000 population = (Total number of overdose deaths/Total population) × 100,000
- Crude Opioid-Related Overdose Death Rate per 100,000 population = (Total number of opioid-related overdose deaths/Total population) × 100,000
Crude death rates based on fewer than six cases (i.e., deaths) are considered statistically unreliable and are therefore not published. Opioid-related deaths are a subset that specifically involve prescription opioids, heroin, fentanyl, or other synthetic opioids. Overdose deaths include fatalities from all drug types, including opioids, stimulants, benzodiazepines, and other substances.
