About The Survey

The Michigan Profile for Healthy Youth (MiPHY) was completed by 7, 9, and 11 grade students in Michigan. Students completed an on-line, anonymous questionnaire. Participation is voluntary for both schools and youth. Surveying is facilitated by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and occurs biannually.

Survey procedures were designed to protect the privacy of students by allowing for anonymous and voluntary participation. Local parental notification procedures were followed before survey administration. Responses are reported as an unweighted percentage of reported response by youth which is aggregated anonymously. The MiPHY data reflect student survey responses from high schools that voluntarily participated in the county, thus may not be representative of all schools in the county.

Data Limitations

Voluntary and Anonymous Participation. Due to the voluntary nature of MiPHY surveying participation, counties who opted to not participate will be left blank on all data table charting. Additionally counties with more than one district may report for one district but not another. Due to the anonymity of the survey, there is no way to determine which districts are represented.

Combined Counties. In smaller counties that have fewer school districts, data has been combined by MDE. Combined counties include:

  • Alpena, Montmorency, and Alcona
  • Chippewa, Luce, and Mackinac
  • Crawford, Ogemaw, Oscoda, and Roscommon
  • Mason and Lake
  • Delta and Schoolcraft
